SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Maureen Cobile scored eight points and sparked the Troubadours to a 55-45 win over West Campus in their Foundation Game Monday night to open the 2014015 season. Cobile missed her entire junior season due to an injury and responded with a big debut.

“I thought she was a catalyst,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “She gave us energy defensively and guarded their speedy guard. Offensively, she supplied us with eight points coming at the end of the first and beginning of the second which really helped. I thought she was the player of the game.”

Both teams started slowly in the season opener, ending the first quarter tied at 6. The intensity of the game picked up in the second as St. Francis took a lead but trailed at the half 27-21.

Cobile keyed a run in the third quarter as the Troubadours fought to get back in the game and eventually take the lead.

“It was really great,” said Cobile. “I missed being on the court. It was nice to have a good game coming back. We got over our nerves at first and got into a nice rotation and flow.”

Sophomore Janae Fairbrook hit a pair of second-half triples that both tied the game and gave SF the lead for good as they built a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter.

“We are trying to encourage Janae to not have a conscience,” said Pitton. “She is a great shooter and she needs to understand she can miss because she is going to make quite a few. The last one was a step back that I really enjoyed watching.”

Junior Kyra Huffman led the team with 12 points, while junior Lauren Craig had 11 points aided by a 5-for-6 night at the line. She scored nine of her 11 points in the second half. Angie Ortiz scored seven points and Fairbrook finished with six in the win.

“We are going home so hopefully that will be motivation to get everybody ready,” said Pitton.

St. Francis hosts Placer Tuesday in the home and season opener with all three levels in action starting with the freshmen at 4:00 p.m.
