Soccer Defeats Franklin on Barrett Goal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Hailey Barrett scored the only goal of the game and the St. Francis defense came up strong led by 16 saves by goalies Catie Brown and Allie Carmickle to post a 1-0 victory and hand Franklin their first loss of the season.

“I thought the team did a great job of playing for each other today,” said Interim Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “We created a lot of chances in the first half and got a little unlucky in front of the net. Yet they were not deterred. They passed and defended hard.”

The Troubadours had several chances in the first half but failed to find the net. Senior Catie Brown held Franklin in check with six saves as the game reached halftime scoreless.

“Both of them made key saves for us as did their goalkeeper,” said Robinson. “The fans had a great opportunity to watch some good high school soccer today.”

Franklin (8-1-0) entered the game undefeated and leading the Delta League with a 4-0 mark.

“I don’t really remember what happened but it was in the moment and it felt really good to score,” said Barrett, who gave St. Francis a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute. “I was really excited about it.”

St. Francis seemed to control the pace in the first half and kept pushing in the second half despite more chances for Franklin.

“They were really aggressive and they played really hard,” said senior Kirsten Kjome. “We battled it out really well. It feels so good.”

Carmickle took over in goal in the second half and made 10 saves in the half, preserving the shutout and the win.

“I could not do anything without my backline, midfield and forwards,” said Carmickle. “It was a team effort. When we finally did score, they became more aggressive and we had to get on more of the defensive. All in all, we did really well and I am proud of my team.”

St. Francis (9-1-1, 3-1-1) moved into third overall in the standings just a half game behind Franklin and Davis (4-1).

“We were definitely scared coming in because they beat Davis and came in No. 1,” said Barrett. “Now we have a lot more confidence and it is good going forward.”

St. Francis has now won three straight entering the game at Monterey Trail on Wednesday.
