Soccer Garners No. 4 Seed in Section Playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis soccer team was awarded a No. 4 seed in the Sac Joaquin Section playoffs starting Tuesday, May 6. The Troubadours will host No. 13 Armijo out of the Monticello Empire League at 4 p.m. at St. Francis.

“I think it is fair,” said Head Coach Rosella Kelly, who is in her second season leading the program. “We are prepared for anything. We are going to do our best regardless. It is always nice to have the home-field advantage.”

Armijo, located in Fairfield, Calif., finished third in the Monticello Empire League with a 10-6-4 record, including a 6-5-4 mark in league play.  They are led by senior Monique Evans, who has scored 13 goals on the season.

St. Francis finished the regular season with a 17-3-5 record, including a 6-2-2 mark in the Delta River League action to finish second overall to Oak Ridge. The Troubadours defeated Oak Ridge in the season finale on Thursday 2-1 behind goals by Anna Gregg and Trinity Connaughton.

Gregg leads the team with 22 goals on the season.

The winner of the St. Francis-Armijo game will play the winner of No. 5 Enochs and No. 12 Merced on Thursday, May 8.

Enochs is the No. 5 seed in the bracket after recording a 16-1 overall record with a 12-0 league record. The Eagles have six players with five or more goals on the season including leading scorer Caleigh Hufans with 15 goals.

Other first round games include No. 1 Granite Bay hosting No. 16 West, No. 9 Davis Senior at No. 8 McClatchy, No. 14 Lincoln at No. 3 Oak Ridge, No. 11 Lodi at No. 6 Turlock, No. 10 Kennedy at No. 7 Pleasant Grove and No. 15 Pitman at No. 2 Franklin.

St. Francis posted a 2-3-1 record against the Division I field including two wins and a tie over Oak Ridge. The Troubadours lost to Franklin in the championship game of the Christian Brothers Tournament and lost to Pleasant Grove twice in Delta River League action.

The Troubadours have won 12 section titles in school history with the last title coming in 2010. They reached the semifinals last season before losing to Franklin.

The semifinals are scheduled for May 14 with the finals on May 17.

Tickets for the event are $6 for adults, $4 for students (K-12) and children age five and under are free.
