SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Meredith Cook and junior Taylor Simpkins each scored two goals to help St. Francis to a 6-0 win over Sheldon Monday night.

“I am pleased not just with the result but how the result happened,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “We got really solid, effective play from a variety of people. It is one of the things we have been missing.”

Senior Bridget Foy scored 11 minutes into the game off a cross from senior Hailey Barrett with a header into the goal. Barrett scored five minutes later to extend the lead to two and junior Taylor Simpkins scored the first of her two goals before halftime off an assist by Allie Cloninger.

“We were layered today,” said Robinson. “If one layer did not get it, they back tackled into the next and that transition was quick and effective. As a result, we spent a lot of time in their half and we did not have to defend the whole field.”

Simpkins scored again in the second half off a second assist by Koerwitz before Meredith Cook scored twice to complete the scoring. Koerwitz finished with two assists as eight players contributed points with either a goal or an assist.

“It feels great,” said Cook. “I am really glad to have contributed to our win.”

St. Francis maintained their place in the standings, improving to 4-3-4 in league play and 10-3-4 overall. The Huskies dropped to 4-7 and 6-8. The Troubadours swept Sheldon in two games and hold a two-game lead for one of the five playoff spots.

“In our pregame talk and our warmups, it was on all of our minds,” said Cook about the playoff implications of the game. “This could have been a deal breaker for playoffs so it was really important to win. We secured it pretty well.”

The Troubadours take on Franklin at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Elk Grove. Thirteen seniors will be recognized on Monday prior to the Monterey Trail game.
