SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Savannah Tijerino-Santos scored in the 13th minute to tie the game at 1 and neither team scored again as the first meeting between the Delta League rivals ended in a tie.

“I saw Ari making her run outside and I was not expecting the ball to get to me,” said Tijerino-Santos. “But you have to be there in support.  I was just trying to score.”

Junior Ariana Avila made the cross to setup the goal.

“It was a rough game and we expected them to come out hard,” said senior goalie Merdith Kaeser. “I am not sure we were quite ready so the first goal really put us in place and we really needed to step it up. Savvy came back with a great goal. It reset the mood for everybody.”

Kaeser recorded 24 saves for the Troubadours to earn the draw with the Blue Devils.

“She has been awesome and had some great saves that really kept us in the game,” said senior Ashley Newland of Kaeser.

“We were all helping to coach each other and make sure everyone had a mark,” said Kaeser. “It formed together great and we played awesome.”

St. Francis remained undefeated on the season at 6-0-2, while Davis moved to 5-0-1.

“We had to stay tight on our marks and keep pressing the ball,” said Newland. “Everyone helped defend that half. It is just the beginning and we know what we need to work on.”

Both teams battled hard in the second half but held each other in check.

“It was more of a challenge in the second half for us but I feel like we played well,” said Tijerino-Santos. “We got the ball and did not let them score. We did what we needed to do to keep a tie.”

St. Francis hosts Elk Grove on March 28 after spring break.
