Soccer Ties Davis 2-2 in Battle of Top-Ranked Teams

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Anna Gregg scored two goals but Davis responded both times to force a 2-2 tie in a matchup of two of the Delta League and state’s top teams Monday.

“We are in a place where we are moving forward,” said Interim Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “You can see it and feel it. I am really pleased with that. Would I have liked to get a “W” if we could have held on, sure, but they are a good team.”

After losing 3-0 in the first matchup with Davis on March 6, St. Francis (12-1-2, 6-1-2) had won six straight while allowing just one goal, posting five shutouts and was ranked No. 2 in the state according to MaxPreps. Davis was tied for first in the league standings with Franklin at 7-1 and boasted a 10-1 overall mark and No. 3 state ranking.

Gregg, who now has a league-best 22 goals on the season, scored in the second minute of the game, giving the Troubadours the early advantage.

“It changes everything,” said Robinson of the early goal. “We talked about the difference in playing style and venue. To score three minutes in, made us feel good. It gave us a mistake and we were still in it.”

Davis equaled the scored in the 25th minute on a goal by Sulelikha Sutter. Gregg scored again in the 38th minute to give SF a 2-1 advantage at the break.

The Blue Devils tied the score 15 minutes into the second half on a goal by Julia Curtis. Both teams had opportunities over the final 25 minutes but neither found the net.

“We are right where we want to be right now,” said Robinson. “I am more interested in the big picture moving forward than one result against Davis. I feel really good.”

Robinson credited the job by goalies Catie Brown and Allie Carmickle and the overall defensive effort in the contest.

“They were fantastic,” said Robinson. “They gritted it out. Both goalkeepers were fantastic and the back line did a great job. They have some speed and yet we managed it.”

St. Francis hosts Elk Grove on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

“We have learned a few things and improved,” said Robinson. “I would not be surprised if we see them again.”

Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs start on May 5.
