Swimmer Mitchell Coordinates Successful Caps for Cancer

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Junior swimmer Chloe Mitchell helped raise $2,200 for breast cancer research via her 2014 Caps for Cancer Fundraiser with all the proceeds donated to the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center Breast Cancer research department.

Mitchell was touched by cancer early in her life when two friends lost their mothers to the disease. She wanted to do more than wear a pink shirt or dye her hair.

“The situation inspired me to do something for women who have or had breast cancer to promote research,” said Mitchell.

She established the idea to raise funds by selling swim caps. She started the program with her former club team the Sierra Marlins and recently completed a campaign with her current Davis-Arden Racing Team (DART).

“It was really cool to have the teams participate in this fundraiser,” said Mitchell. “It brought both teams together. It was nice to be united with all these caps.”

Mitchell will officially present the check next week, a nice celebration to her efforts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“They are really appreciative,” said Mitchell. “It is really cool to donate the money to UC Davis since my mom works at the school. I am really proud of myself and my teammates. They all chipped in and every kid bought at least one cap. It was really fantastic to see everyone in the pool in the same cap. I am most proud of the great response and reaction.”

After a successful sophomore season, Mitchell has her expectations high for her junior campaign with her St. Francis teammates.

“It is going to be really different without our senior class that has moved on,” said Mitchell. “But it is also really cool because I am in a leadership position as a junior. I think our junior class is really strong, the entire team is amazing and we have a whole new batch of freshmen. I am excited to see what they have to offer. I think we can swim really well this year.”

Mitchell, who is originally from Maryland, was an All-Delta River League selection in four events last season and was a member of the River Cats All-City team. She plans to swim in college and has an impressive list of schools on her list including Notre Dame, Villanova, Georgetown, UConn, BC, BU and Xavier.
