Track and Field Posts Strong Start at DRL Trials

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – The St. Francis track and field team began defense of its Delta River League title at the DRL League Trials on Saturday at Oak Ridge High School.

The Troubadours qualified 14 student-athletes into the finals scheduled for Friday, May 16. St. Francis advanced three runners each in the 200 meters, 400 meters and 800 meters.

Junior Sydney Hunter won the 200m in 25.91 followed by sophomore Kiani Reyna in 25.92. Sophomore Lillian Enes was fifth in 26.78. Reyna also qualified in the 100 meters, finishing third in 12.77. Enes won the 400 meters in 59.62, edging teammate Ariane Arndt, who was second in 59.73.  Hunter was third in 59.97 to complete the sweep.

Senior Lauren LaRocco, Arndt and Madison Rawson each advanced in the 800 meters.

Amanda Schnabel was the top qualifier in both the 100m Hurdles (15.29) and 300m Hurdles (47.24). Freshman Elizabeth Hennessy was fifth (17.36) and third (48.78), respectively. Senior Christine Cates was ninth in the 100m Hurdles in 18.87.

Three field event finals were contested as the Troubadours took the early lead in the meet with 29.33 points.

Junior Samantha Ruggles won the shot put in 38-3. Overall, St. Francis has four of the top throwers in the event with Kayla O’Brine finishing second (34-9.5), Maggie Oys in sixth (29-1.5) and Eileen Walsh in eighth (25-2.25).

Freshman Ava Bean finished third in the high jump with a best clearance of 4-8. Sophomore Emma Kennedy and Anna Kashuba each cleared 4-4 to place in the top eight.

Freshman Meaghan Rodgers posted a jump of 32-5.75 in the triple jump, finishing fifth overall.

Friday’s meet begins with the field events at 3:30 p.m., followed by the start of the running events at 5 p.m.

St. Francis was also well represented in the Frosh-Soph prelims. Freshman Alyssa Shebert won both the 100 meters (13.31) and 200m (27.21). Sophomore Sophie Huang clocked 1:05.02 to win the 400 meters, while sophomore Chase Worthen won two events. She finished first in the 800 meters (2:28.24) and 3200 meters (12:00.44).
