Troubadours Roll into Second Round

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Susie Rogers had a game-high 20 points to lead St. Francis to a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff win 84-50 over Bella Vista Tuesday night.

“Susie played a very good game, Janae knocked down her shots and Kyra finished strong reading those passing lanes,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We got good help from the bench. It was an all-around team effort.”

Rogers, who scored 21 in a playoff win last season over Edison, recorded her second career 20-point game, hitting eight baskets including two three-pointers, while recording six steals and three assists.

St. Francis (20-7) won its sixth straight game overall and will face No. 1 St. Mary’s, who defeated Merced 122-33. The Troubadours had four players overall in double figures, including a double-double by Lauren Craig with 17 points and 16 rebounds.

“Lauren had a fantastic game in every aspect,” said Pitton. “She was shooting, playing defense and rebounding. She was awesome.”

Junior Kyra Huffman also notched 17 in the win, while sophomore Janae Fairbrook added 14.

The Troubadours led early and never really looked back, building an 18-7 lead in the first quarter as six players scored.

“It was really good to be at home and come out strong,” said Rogers. “We got the energy up and got the early lead, which was important.”

St. Francis led 39-23 at the half but the Broncos fought tough in the third, staying even with the Troubies but failing to cut the lead. The Troubadours scored 32 points in the fourth to put the game away with Huffman scoring 12 of her 17 points in the period.

“They were getting really tired so our motto was to keep pushing the ball,” said Huffman. “I think we executed it really well.”

Bella Vista (19-8) was led by the 13 points by Rachael DiRegolo.

Overall, St. Francis hit nine three-pointers in the game.

“We planned on making our shots and had a shoot around before the game to get prepared for it,” said Rogers. “It was good for us.”

St. Francis advances to the second round for the second straight year, recording their 20th win over the season in the process. Tipoff will be 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s on Thursday.

“It was totally fun,” said Rogers. “It was our last home game so it was good to go out with a big win. Nobody expects us to win except us. We played with them at the beginning of the season and we know we can now.”
