Volleyball Gains Experience in Win over Sheldon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore setter Kelsey Grover made her first varsity start and led the St. Francis volleyball team to a straight set 3-0 win over Sheldon Tuesday night.

“It felt really good,” said Grover, who filled in for senior Marissa Gollnick. “I was so excited to start and be part of the whole team. We did good and played more as a team but I think we could have done more talking and had more energy.”

St. Francis jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first set behind the serving of Grover and never looked back, taking the first set 25-5.

“I really liked the spirit Sheldon played with,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright.

In the second set, Wright gave her bench a chance to get in on the action.

“The future is bright, once they relax,” said Wright, who played a rotation that included three freshmen, two sophomores and three juniors with Grover. “They did a good job. I was real pleased with everyone. I thought Kelsey did a good job setting tonight for Marissa and Abby went in and did a good job. It was fun to see (freshmen) Aiyu and Sydney get in and get a couple kills and blocks.”

After a slow start in set two, the Troubadours found their form to post a 25-12 win and closed out the match with a 25-8 victory in the third.

“We were very supportive of each other and that helped,” said Grover.

After three straight at home, St. Francis travels to Franklin on Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m.

“We just have to stay focused and be more energized and be ready to go out there and play,” said Glover.
