Volleyball Transfer Fresques A Welcome Addition

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team started wearing new Adidas uniforms this week that forced everyone, including Head Coach Alynn Wright, to become familiar with some new numbers. Wright has quickly learned the new No. 8 on the roster, a player who has led the team in kills this week.

That player is senior transfer Ashlynn Fresques, who has recorded a combined 26 kills in leading the Troubadours to a pair of wins this week, including a 25-6, 25-14, 25-12 win over Grant Thursday night.

“It feels very good and I am happy,” said Fresques. “It is more fun on the court than sitting on the bench keeping stats. It was kinda stressful.”

Fresques, a transfer from Christian Brothers, sat out the Sac-Joaquin Section required transfer period and became eligible to play on Oct. 5. She missed the first 18 games for the team.

“The thing that has impressed me the most is that she has worked unbelievably hard since we stepped in this gym,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “She has been an inspiration for this team. It is not easy to practice and practice and not play. She was on the bench cheering for everyone and being a great teammate. She is a wonderful, young lady. It has been a pleasure to have her.”

New classmate Abby Fitzgerald is happy to have her as a teammate.

“We all trying to be very welcoming,” said senior Abby Fitzgerald, a former teammate and longtime friend. “She is pretty shy so we had to make her out-going. It is awesome to be on the court with her again.”

Fitzgerald says she brings a lot to the Troubadours, who improved to 5-2 in Delta League play.

“She brings competiveness and aggression,” said Fitzgerald. “She will get kills that no one will ever touch. It is really awesome for our team.”

Wright also likes her influence on the court with her ability to find the floor with her attacks.

“She brings a whole new dynamic,” said Wright, who is in her 27th season at the helm of the program. “She is an offensive weapon for us and she terminates. It has been the thing that has been lacking for us. We keep balls up and in. It is nice to have a terminator.”

Fresques, who had a team-best 15 kills and hit .684 against the Pacers, has made a quick impression in her first week back on the court.

“It is actually really fun,” said Fresques. “I love the environment here and everyone is so nice and welcoming. It is a sisterhood. I am really glad I am here and I am enjoying my year so far.”

The experienced Fresques hopes to help the Troubadours make a good push in the second half of the season.

“I bring leadership on the court and someone that can be your go to (player) and someone you can trust on the court,” said Fresques. “I am the quiet wave on the court that brings everything together.”

Based on the first two games, it is a perfect match.
