ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team defeated Sheldon 25-15, 25-12, 25-11 Thursday night behind a team effort.

“It was a great team win,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “It was fun to see everybody make plays and everyone made at least one big play to contribute to the overall win. It was fun to see a few kids who have not got to play a whole lot out there and enjoying themselves. The team rallied around them.”

St. Francis (23-9) jumped out to a quick lead and cruised to a win in the opening set.

“I think we did pretty good, especially considering we are the freshmen and we are kinda the underdogs” said freshman Aiyu Aimufua, who started the game for the Troubadours. “I had a really good time with my teammates tonight, while learning and improving.”

The Huskies battled early in the second, trailing just 6-5 but St. Francis pulled away to take the second set 25-12.

“We communicated well and did everything we do in practice,” said freshman Sydney Ranker.

Nina Sanfilippo led the team with seven kills and Kelsey Grover recorded a match-high 17 assists and nine digs.

St. Francis was able to play their entire roster, getting valuable experience for the team. The team will host the annual Super 8 Tournament on Saturday featuring Campolindo, Christian Brothers, El Camino, Granite Bay, Oak Ridge, St. Mary’s and Vintage.

“We are so excited,” said Aimufua. “A challenge is always great. I think we are ready for it.”

Games start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and tickets are available at the door. St. Francis will have a snack bar and tournament t-shirts available.
