Charter Headlines Water Polo Honorees at Banquet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Lauren Charter was selected the team’s Player of the Year at the St. Francis water polo team banquet Tuesday night.

Charter scored a team-best 55 goals and 78 points to lead the Troubadours to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division I finals for the third consecutive season. A two-time USA Water Polo Academic All-American, she earned all-section and All-Delta League first-team honors in 2014. She finished her career with 109 career goals and will compete for California next fall.

Senior Annie Rafeld was chosen as the Most Inspirational Player by her teammates. Rafeld, who is from Granite Bay, scored nine goals and had nine assists in 12 games this season.

Sophomore Sally Ferguson, who lives in Sacramento, was selected as the Most Improved. She saw action in all 28 games, scoring eight goals and 11 assists on the season to go with 32 steals. She scored two goals and had three assists in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

Junior Maggie Oys, who is from Davis, was selected as the Best Defensive Player. She recorded 48 steals on the season, ranking second on the team. She also was an offensive threat with 34 goals and 20 assists, the third-best totals on the team.

Junior Jennalyn Barthels of Sacramento was named the Best Offensive Player. She ranked second on the team with 46 goals and recorded 10 assists.

Five players earned All-Delta League status, including Charter, Julie Zanobini, Jennalyn Barthels, Maggie Oys and Caroline Urkov. Kira Chavez, who is from El Dorado Hills, received the Delta League Sportsmanship Award.

Charter was named to the CIF Sac-Joaquin All-Section water polo first-team for the second consecutive season and was among four Troubadours overall earning section honors. Julie Zanobini joined Charter on the all-section first team, while Maggie Oys and Jennalyn Barthels were second-team sections.

The Junior Varsity award winners included Hannah Warren (Player of the Year), Maddy Vine (Most Inspirational), Samantha Garaygay (Most Improved), Aubree Barr (Best Defensive Player) and Kobe Carpenter (Best Offensive Player).
