TURLOCK, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team won five of six singles matches and swept the doubles to post an 8-1 victory over Turlock Tuesday afternoon in the second round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division I Girls Team Tennis Championship.

“We did not know what to expect so we came out with the girls going for it,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “We are seeing a lot of girls peeking right now, especially the doubles teams, and the singles are getting stronger. To see it come together is great.”

Turlock entered as the No. 1 seed out of the Central California Conference.

Jane Sadler at No. 3 singles and Avery Spector at No. 1 singles each posted quick straight set wins. Sadler won 6-1, 6-0 over Mila Jones and Spector won 6-0, 6-1 for the early lead. Perneet Powar (No. 5) and Anna Kropf (No. 4) recorded identical 6-2, 6-1 wins to give the Troubadours a 4-0 lead in the match.

Turlock won its only point at No. 6 singles before senior Kendall Spector clinched the match at No. 2 singles with a three-set win over Madeline Hillis 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.

“It felt really good and I pushed through after the second set,” said Spector. “I came back and collected myself, working on the basics.  It feels good to get a win and have to work in the first round. They are a really good team so I am really proud of every one.”

The Troubadours swept the three doubles matches to complete the victory. Abby Benvenuti and Micah Dial combined for a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2, while Marcela Sosa and Megan Khan were victorious at No. 3. They posted a 6-2, 6-1 win.

“We had some really nice volleys and serves,” said Khan. “It was good all around.”

Martina Penalosa and Christina Marengo finished off the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

The Troubadours will face the winner of Sierra Foothill Conference No. 1 seed Del Oro and Rodriguez, the No. 2 seed out of the Monticello Empire League, on Monday, Nov. 11 in the quarterfinal round.

“It feels really good,” said Sosa. “We practice so much and have so many games. It is good that it is all playing off.”

Avery Spector (singles) and Jane Sadler and Kendall Spector (doubles) will represent St. Francis later this week in the Sac-Joaquin Individual Section playoffs Nov. 7-8.
