Water Polo Needs Late Surge to Beat Granite Bay

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – St. Francis scored three times in the final quarter and tightened up its defense to post a 9-6 win on the road on Thursday.

‘We played really well in the first half and dominated instead of playing into their game,” said junior Kobe Carpenter, who scored two goals including one in the decisive fourth quarter.

Carpenter, Caroline Wilkins and Sally Ferguson each scored in the final period and senior goalie Maddy Vine held the Grizzlies scoreless over the final seven minutes to help SF to the victory.

Granite Bay tied the match at 6 after a four-goal third period, erasing the positive energy from a good first half.

“We lost our mentality and got tired,” said Ferguson. “We need to work on our endurance and stick with it the whole game.”

Ferguson finished with a team-best four goals. Freshman Caroline Wilkins and Kobe Carpenter each scored two goals and Kendall Houck added a solo goal.

“We were very confident with the offense in the first half and we were willing to take the shot,” said Ferguson. “In the second half we did not take as many shots.”

St. Francis is off this weekend before hosting Monterey Trail on Tuesday.
