Murbach ‘14 Named WCC All-Academic

Alumna Cheryl Murbach ’14 was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team, one of three from the Gonzaga women’s rowing team to tie for league-high honors. She is a sophomore Human Physiology major with a 3.79 GPA. The Zags won the West Coast Conference title and will compete in the NCAA Championships.

Alumna Dyer Received Jim Shea Award at Santa Clara Banquet

Santa Clara’s Camille Dyer ’12 was awarded the Jim Shea Award at the annual Red and White Celebration at Malley Center on the Santa Clara campus on May 22.

The award recognizes one male or female student-athlete who has courageously led his or her team through selfless actions and been a leader in the campus community. Jim Shea was the first Santa Clara student-athlete whose life was cut short while serving in the Vietnam War.

2016 Diving Highlights

  • Sophomore Molly Wilson was 16th at the CIF State Diving Championships at the Clovis Olympic Complex. Wilson survived two cuts to score 406.70 for her 11-dive schedule. She is the highest finisher at the state meet in school history.
  • Wilson won the Sac-Joaquin Section Diving Championship. Wilson scored 430.60 to defeat Natasha Sondeno (Pitman), who tallied 427.95. Senior Tiffany Wong was fifth overall and the first alternate with a score of 380.95.

2015-16 Basketball Highlights

  • The St. Francis basketball team’s postseason run ended with a loss in the CIF Division I State Championship but not before posting a set of accomplishments that will be remembered forever in the school’s history books.
  • St. Francis lost 64-51 to Brea Olinda in their quest for the second state championship in school history. The Troubadours had not reached the state final since the school won the Division III title in 1993, bringing back memories from alumnae and fans alike. Several members of the 1993 attended the state final at Sleep Train Arena.

Senior Cerezo-Rangel to Throw for Sonoma State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior thrower Juliana Cerezo-Rangel will compete for the Sonoma State Seawolves next year. A two-sport letter winner at St. Francis, she will continue her career collegiately after first picking up the sport just two years ago.

“To be able to excel in a sport, make it to college and have the opportunity to compete in college is a really good opportunity to have it,” said Cerezo-Rangel, who will major in sociology at the school located in Rohnert Park, Calif., located just 88 miles from Sacramento. “I am really glad to have it.”

Softball Season Ends in Section Playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis softball team lost twice on Saturday and was eliminated from the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.

“I thought we had good momentum going into it, but we were flat today,” said Head Coach Kevin Warren. “We faced two good pitchers back-to-back. After the first game, we scored two runs in the first inning in the second game and I thought we were back on track.”

Wilson Finishes 16th at CIF State Diving

CLOVIS, Calif. – Sophomore Molly Wilson was 16th at the CIF State Diving Championships at the Clovis Olympic Complex.

“Molly was a star today,” said Head Coach Dede Crayne. “She dove steady and strong and completed our goal of making both the cuts to the top 16 divers.  That was a tough field and she made me very proud for her first trip to State.  Keep an eye on this girl.”

Wilson survived two cuts to score 406.70 for her 11-dive schedule. She is the highest finisher at the state meet in school history. Julia Coss was 22nd in 2015.

Senior Ariane Arndt, Relays Wins Section Titles in Big Night on the Track

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior Ariane Arndt reset her own Sac-Joaquin Section meet record in winning the 400 meters and led two relays to team titles as the St. Francis track and field team shined at Elk Grove High School Friday night.

“It is always an honor to be out here and run against amazing competition with amazing teammates and coaches,” said Arndt. “It has been a great four years and I am excited to finish off strong and have such a good end at sections.”

Peters to Swim at State Championships Again, Cal Poly

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Emily Peters qualified in the 50-meter freestyle for the CIF State Swimming Championships starting on Friday, May 20 at the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex.

“It is exciting,” said Peters. “It was a fun meet last year. I am grateful that I can go again and have that opportunity to compete against some fast girls.”

Peters will be swimming at the meet for the second consecutive year and is the only Troubadour in school history to swim at the state meet that started in 2015. She finished 22nd overall last year with a time of 24.24.

Softball Upsets Vintage in Section Playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a single-elimination playoff game facing long odds in seeding, the No.12 seed St. Francis softball team upset No. 5 Vintage Wednesday night 5-2 to advance to the double-elimination bracket starting Friday in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Bracket.

“I am extremely proud because it was a great win beating a higher seeded team that has played very well during the season,” said Head Coach Kevin Warren. “We came out and played our best game of the year.”

Varsity Soccer Banquet — Senior Ashley Newland was named the Cornerstone award and Defensive MVP. Senior Ashley Newland was the Offensive MVP and senior goalie Meredith Kaeser was the Iron Women Award recipient. Junior Ari Avila was the Golden Boot winner.

Track and Field Finishes Second at Delta Meet, Prepares for Sections

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis track and field team finished second at the Delta League Finals on Friday at Sheldon High School, scoring 106.5 points behind team champion Davis (195). But the overall goal of the night was advancement to the Sac-Joaquin Section Trials on Wednesday at Elk Grove High School. The top four and finishers with qualifying times compete this week.

Swimming and Diving Finishes Fourth at Section Finals

LODI, Calif. – The St. Francis swimming and diving team finished fourth at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships on Saturday at Tokay High School.

“Today was a good day,” said Head Coach Richard Levin. “Coming into this season, I didn’t think we would be able to get fourth. I knew we were in a fight against Rio (for third) starting today. We ended up 10 points behind but I could not be prouder. It is bittersweet because this senior class has a lot of kids I am going to miss. It is sad to see them be done.”

Swimming Advances Six at Section Finals on Saturday

LODI, Calif. – The St. Francis swimming team advanced six swimmers in a combined six events and all three relays at the Sac-Joaquin Section Swimming Championships at Tokay High School. The finals will be contested on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Senior Chloe Mitchell had the top finish on the day, placing fourth in the 500 free with a time of 5:01.60. She also qualified in the 200 free (1:52.84). Katie McIntee was fifth in the 100 free and ninth in the 200 free, while classmate Emily Peters finished fifth in the 50 free (24.49).

Softball Plays Vintage in Section Softball Playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – No. 12 seed St. Francis will play No. 5 Vintage in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs announced Thursday. The game will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18 on Field 3 at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

The winner advances to the double-elimination tournament starting Friday, May 20.

St. Francis finished with a 13-9-1 overall mark and went 9-5 in the Delta League to finish third overall.
