Volleyball Posts 3-0 Win over Davis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Coming off the big win on Monday over Pleasant Grove, the Troubadour volleyball team wanted to keep the momentum going on Wednesday against Davis. They accomplished their goal with a 3-0 win to improve to 8-2 in Delta League play.

“After Monday’s game we had a lot of energy and we came out with a good win,” said Kenny. “Coming in (tonight) we knew how good Davis was so we did not get over confident and kept a positive attitude. We came into the game strong knowing we have to give it our all and fight the whole time.”

Junior Lauren Allen Shoots Career-Best 77

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Lauren Allen shot a career-best 77 for 18 holes to lead St. Francis to a win in the second Delta League Center. The Troubadours posted a 408 team score to defeat the three other schools fielding full teams.

Allen posted a five-over par 77 to lead the team. Sophomore Olivia Alcoran and Patricia Sweeney each posted rounds of 81 followed by freshman Nashla Aguero with an 84. Freshman Ceci Fletcher carded an 85 and Lauren Liberatore recorded a 90.

Volleyball Upsets Pleasant Grove

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Alexa Edwards had a double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs as St. Francis upset Pleasant Grove 25-20, 25-23, 25-18. The Eagles entered the match 20-2 on the season and undefeated in Delta League play.

“I really liked the team I saw tonight,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “They stayed composed and within themselves and did not get frazzled because it was noisy in here tonight. They followed the game plan, played some great defense and we had kids diving all over the floor. Every player made plays.”

Cross Country Finishes 10th at Clovis Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. – Freshman Izzy Fauria finished fourth overall as the St. Francis cross country team placed 10th at the Clovis Invitational on Saturday.

Fauria clocked 17:52.7 over the 5k course at Woodward Park, site of the 2016 CIF State Championships. Sydney Vandegrift was 19th overall in 18:11 despite battling an illness during the week. Sophomore Sophie DeBenedetti placed third on the team in 19:10 (77th overall).

Great Oak won the team title with 81 followed by Davis Senior (114) and Arcadia (143). St. Francis was 10th overall with 286 points.

Golf Continues Strong Play Behind 35 by Sweeney

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Patricia Sweeney shot a career-best one-under par 35 to help St. Francis post a 196 to record a dual match victory over Sheldon Wednesday.

“I had a pretty good round,” said Sweeney. “I struggled with a few of my drives but I was able to get on the green and putt. I had only 13 putts on the day, one of my best putting days.”

Sweeney’s round included seven pars, two birdies and one bogey.

Tennis Starts Second Half with 9-0 Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Abby Benvenuti posted an unblemished 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Angela Emerick as St. Francis posted a 9-0 win over Pleasant Grove on Tuesday. The Troubadours improved to 9-2 overall and 8-0 in league play.

St. Francis swept all six singles positions, losing a total of nine games while taking all 12 sets. Sophomore Myra Anwar won at No. 1, freshman Adithi Benush was a winner at No. 2. Juniors Kiya Jackson, Kyla Jackson and Marisa Fat were also winners for the Troubies.

Water Polo Needs Late Surge to Beat Granite Bay

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – St. Francis scored three times in the final quarter and tightened up its defense to post a 9-6 win on the road on Thursday.

‘We played really well in the first half and dominated instead of playing into their game,” said junior Kobe Carpenter, who scored two goals including one in the decisive fourth quarter.

Carpenter, Caroline Wilkins and Sally Ferguson each scored in the final period and senior goalie Maddy Vine held the Grizzlies scoreless over the final seven minutes to help SF to the victory.

Golf Shoots Season-Best Again, Defeats Grant

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Chase Saca shot a one-over par 37 to lead the St. Francis golf team in a dual match win over Grant on Wednesday.

“We did very good as a team,” said freshman Nashla Aguero, who posted the second-best score on the day. “I am very a happy about that.”

Saca had the low score on the day, posting her best high school score by three strokes for nine holes, with Aguero one shot back with a two-over par 38, the low round of her freshman year.

“I hit a lot of great shots and made a lot of putts,” said Aguero. “I am very happy.”

Cross Country Wins Delta League Meet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Sydney Vandegrift led a strong varsity performance that saw five runners finish in the top eight and seven place among the top 15 as St. Francis won the Delta League meet with 24 team points.

“I knew this was a flat course and I wanted to go out and test my limits,” said Vandegrift. “Our team is really rocking it right now and I am really proud of all of our freshmen. They are working really hard and I am so glad that they came to St. Francis.”

Tennis Posts 7-2 Win over Monterey Trail

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Kiya Jackson stepped up to No. 1 singles as St. Francis remained undefeated at 6-0 after the first-half of Delta League play with a 7-2 win over Monterey Trail at the Rio del Oro Racquet Club.

Jackson, who posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Lisa Cummings, set the tone as all six singles players won in straight sets. Sister Kyla Jackson won at No. 2 and junior Marisa Fat failed to lose a game at No. 3. Senior Abby Benvenuti was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4, while both senior Annie Gianulias and senior Sabrina Voeller blanked their opponents.

Volleyball Posts 3-0 Win over Sheldon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis posted a 3-0 win over Sheldon on Tuesday behind a strong hitting night from captains Claire Schutz and Claire Barbe and freshman Alexa Edwards. The Troubadours cruised to a 25-7, 25-15, 25-8 win over the Huskies.

“We tried our best to execute more complicated plays and we did that really well tonight,” said Schutz, who hit a team-best 58 percent. “It gives our girls a lot of confidence in themselves heading into the game at Franklin.”

Golf Shoots a Season-best 200 in Elk Grove Match

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis golf team posted a season-best 200 in its match against Elk Grove on Tuesday. The Troubadours won by forfeit as the Thundering Herd fielded only four players.

Sophomore Olivia Alcoran shot an even-par 36 to tie for the low round of the day with Elk Grove’s Jillian Knox. Classmate Patricia Sweeney was just two strokes back after carding a 38. Junior Chase Saca posted a 41 and freshman Ceci Fletcher record a 42. Nashla Aguero shot a 43 and junior Lauren Liberatore had a 44.

St. Francis hosts Grant on Wednesday.

Tennis Takes Matchup with Franklin 7-2

ELK GROVE, Calif. – St. Francis and Franklin tied for the Delta League tennis title last year and had the first match against their rival circled on the schedule. The Troubadours made the first statement of the season with a 7-2 win over the Wildcats at Laguna Creek Racquet Club to take over first-place in the league standings.

“We have been looking forward to Franklin knowing it would be one of our toughest matches all season,” said senior Sabrina Voeller. “It feels very good to win. It is amazing.”

Frosh Volleyball Defeats Elk Grove 2-0          

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis freshman volleyball team improved to 11-1 and 4-0 in the Delta League with a 2-0 win over Elk Grove. Kaityn Back was named the TroubieTV Player of the Game after today’s 2-0 win over Elk Grove by the frosh volleyball team. Golf Wins Third Straight Dual

DAVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis golf team posted a 218 team score to defeat Davis Tuesday afternoon at El Macero CC. St. Francis posted six of the top eight scores in the match led by sophomore Olivia Alcoran. Davis shot a 258.

“Olivia was positioning the ball well on a very tough course with a lot of tucked pins,” said Head Coach Bert Jones.

Alcoran was the medalist for the match with a two-over par 38, one better than Davis’ Marie Dean, who posted a 39.

Tennis Shuts Out Sheldon in Delta Dual

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Myra Anwar led a sweep in singles to help St. Francis post a 9-0 win over Sheldon in a Delta League dual match at Rio del Oro Racquet Club. The Troubadours improved to 4-0 in league play heading into a match against rival Franklin on Thursday.

“Everyone played really well today and put out their best efforts, trying to improve and get pumped up for the Franklin match,” said sophomore Myra Anwar.

Anwar defeated Sheldon’s Krista Lee at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2 to improve to 4-4 overall at the top position.

Vote for Cross Country’s Isabella Fauria for High School Performance of the Week

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman cross country runner Isabella Fauria is a nominee for the DyeStat Performance of the Week. Fauria won the De La Salle/Carondelet Nike Invitational Cross Country 3-mile race on Saturday, crossing the line in 17:38.

St. Francis finished second overall to Davis 58-119 on the strength of six runners in the top 55. Just behind Fauria was junior Sydney Vandegrift, who placed sixth in 18:06. Sophomore Sophie DeBenedetti was 24th (18:58.1), while Haley Silva was 35th (19:20.4) . Allie Lourim and Emma Hollenbach placed 53rd and 55th, respectively.

This Week in Troubie Sports…

Cross country runs at the Nike Invitational hosted by DeLaSalle and Carondelet on Saturday looking for their second consecutive win. Frosh and JV Volleyball play in tournaments over the weekend before traveling to Davis on Monday with the varsity team. Golf is at Davis on Tuesday in their only match of the week. Tennis hosts Sheldon on Tuesday before taking on Franklin on Thursday. All three volleyball teams play host to Elk Grove on Wednesday. Both water polo programs compete in tournaments over the weekend. The varsity team plays in the Capital Challenge in Roseville, while the JV team is at Granite Bay. Tennis Improves to 3-0 in League Play

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team improved to 3-0 in Delta League play with two wins this week. The first came in a 7-2 victory over rival Davis across the Causeway on Tuesday, while the team returned home Thursday to post a 9-0 win over Elk Grove.
