Charter Headlines Water Polo Honorees at Banquet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Lauren Charter was selected the team’s Player of the Year at the St. Francis water polo team banquet Tuesday night.

Charter scored a team-best 55 goals and 78 points to lead the Troubadours to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division I finals for the third consecutive season. A two-time USA Water Polo Academic All-American, she earned all-section and All-Delta League first-team honors in 2014. She finished her career with 109 career goals and will compete for California next fall.

Water Polo Finishes Season with Loss in Section Finals

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team put in a valiant effort but fell in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff finals to Davis 7-4 at Roseville Aquatic Complex Saturday.

“We were the underdogs coming in,” said Head Coach Heather Moody. “I thought we performed really well. I am really stoked because as a group, we stepped up and really took on the game.”

St. Francis finished second in the section overall and recorded a 17-11 overall record.

The Troubadours scored first on a goal by junior Jennalyn Barthels to take the early advantage.

Oys and Zanobini Lead Water Polo into Section Finals

CLOVIS, Calif. – Juniors Maggie Oys and Julie Zanobini scored a combined four goals in the second half to help No. 2 seed St. Francis advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section finals against Davis with an 8-4 win on Thursday.

 “It feels really good,” said Oys. “I am really proud of the way the team played and I am looking forward to Saturday.”

Both Oys and Zanobini are from Davis and led the charge in the second half to setup the section championship appearance against rival Davis.

Nine St. Francis Seniors Make College Commitments

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Nine St. Francis High School seniors signed a National Letter-of-Intent or made a commitment to play collegiate sports next year at schools across the country Wednesday. They were recognized on campus as part of the school’s formal fall signing day recognition.

The event was broadcast on the TroubieTV Network on PlayOn Sports.

Water Polo Advances to Section Semifinals

LODI, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals with a 9-5 win over Granite Bay Tuesday at Tokay High School.

“It was a good team attack,” said Head Coach Heather Moody. “We started out slow again so that is concerning so we will work on that for Thursday’s game. Once we got going and communicating, the defense definitely picked up.”

Lodi jumped out to a 1-0 lead to start the game. But the Troubadours settled and led 3-1 after the first period. They extended the lead to 7-2 at the half and the Flames never got any closer.

Water Polo Rolls into Section Quarterfinals

MODESTO, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team rolled past Enochs 22-2 in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs at Johansen High School Saturday afternoon.

“We are really excited,” said senior Annie Rafeld, who scored two goals and added an assist. “We are taking it one game at a time. I really want us to get to the final game and win everything.”

St. Francis jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter but Head Coach Heather Moody was not happy with how the team was playing.

Charter to Play Water Polo at Cal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior water polo player Lauren Charter grew up in a Cal Bear family and now she will continue the legacy after receiving an offer to play for the UC-Berkeley water polo program next year.

“Cal has been a major part of my life,” said Charter. “I will be a fourth generation student at Cal. I was born and raised as a Cal Bear and I am so glad I get to carry on that tradition. To be a student-athlete at such a premier school, it is unimaginable. I am so honored and thankful. It has been my dream to go to Cal and be able to play.”

Volleyball Seeded Fourth in Section Playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team is seeded fourth in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff bracket announced Wednesday afternoon.

St. Francis (28-11) will host 13th-seeded Woodcreek on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to play the winner of No. 5 Granite Bay and No. 12 Franklin-EG. The Troubadours would host the quarterfinal game on Thursday, Nov. 13.

The semifinals will be played on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at school sites with the section final at U.C. Davis at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21.

Water Polo Closes Nor Cals with Overtime Loss

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Senior Lauren Charter scored four times in an overtime loss to Acalanes to close play at the Nor Cal Championships Saturday for the St. Francis water polo team.

The Troubadours led at the break 5-3 and had a two-goal lead entering the fourth. But Acalanes scored twice in the fourth to tie the game and won the game with three goals in overtime.

Juniors Jennalyn Barthels, Kira Chavez and Maggie Oys also scored in the contest.

Water Polo Wins in Double Overtime over Clovis North

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Junior Sam Reinl scored in sudden death on an assist from Ali Tambornini to give St. Francis an 11-10 win over Clovis North at the Nor Cal Championships.

It helped the Troubadours finish their first day with a split after dropping a 12-4 decision to Campolindo in the opening games.

Junior Maggie Oys tied the game with less than one minute left to force the overtime periods. St. Francis has led 8-5 going into the fourth period before Clovis North scored four times to take a 9-8 lead.

Water Polo Falls at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – St. Francis trailed 6-5 entering the fourth quarter but Davis scored six straight to record a 12-6 win Tuesday at the Schaal Aquatic Center.

“Down by one heading into the fourth was a great opportunity, I was really happy where we were,” said Head Coach Heather Moody. “We had a few mental lapses defensively and that gave them the opportunity.”

Senior Lauren Charter and Sally Ferguson each scored twice in the contest. Juniors Jenna Barthels and Julie Zanobini also scored for the Troubadours.

Water Polo Closes Home Schedule with Senior Night Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – As the final seconds ticked off the game clock, it was fitting that all four seniors were in the water as St. Francis closed its home campaign with a 14-9 win over Granite Bay Monday night.

“It was kinda surreal,” said senior Lauren Charter, who had four goals in the win. “The four years I have here have gone so fast. This was a nice way to end a big part of my experience at St. Francis. It felt good to be with a team that I love and have a good game.”

Water Polo Drops Two in Clovis

CLOVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team lost two matches in Clovis Saturday, dropping an 11-5 game to Clovis West and 10-2 decision to Clovis.

The Troubadours trailed 7-4 against Clovis West entering the fourth period but were unable to get a closer. Senior Lauren Charter scored twice and Jennalyn Barthels and Sam Reinl each added goals.

In the second game, Clovis defeated the Troubadours 10-2 with Barthels and Reinl both scoring.

Rafeld and Urkov Lead Water Polo to Win over McClatchy

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Annie Rafeld and junior Caroline Urkov each scored a career-high four goals to lead St. Francis to a 17-3 win over McClatchy Tuesday night at Jesuit High School.

St. Francis (12-4) scored five goals in each of the first two periods to build a 10-1 lead and added four in the third and three in the fourth to win their 12th game of the year.

Junior Jennalyn Barthels and senior Lauren Charter also added three goals. Junior Sam Reinl found the back of the cage two times and senior Bella Smith scored once.

Water Polo Wins Rivalry Game with Rio

ARDEN TOWN, Calif. – Senior Lauren Charter scored four goals to pace the Troubadours to a 8-7 victory over Rio Americano in a rivalry game that dates back 20 years between the schools.

“It was exciting and it was a real team effort,” said Charter. “We started off a little slow but it proved a lot that we were able to comeback from being down and get control of the game. It was one of our hardest games of the season.”

Reinl, Chavez Lead Water Polo to Big Victory

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Sam Reinl scored six goals and junior Kira Chavez added five to lead St. Francis to a 26-3 win over Monterey Trail Wednesday.

The Troubadours scored 14 times in the opening period and led 18-0 at halftime. Junior Elle Minor had nine saves in the cage and only allowed three goals in the game.

Senior Bella Smith and junior Jennalyn Barthels each scored three times, while junior Caroline Urkov, senior Lauren Charter, junior Julie Zanobini and sophomore Alyssa Tamborni scored twice in the contest.

Water Polo Finishes Play at California Capital Challenge

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Lauren Charter scored five goals in a win over Bella Vista Saturday morning but the Troubadours fell in the ninth-place game to Oakdale Saturday afternoon.

Charter led the Troubadours to their second win over Bella Vista this week Saturday morning, finding the back of the cage five times. Junior Kira Chavez added two goals, while junior Jennalyn Barthels, senior Hannah Milanowski and junior Sam Reinl also scored.

Oakdale defeated St. Francis 6-2 despite goals by Charter and junior Maggie Oys.
